Dumb, Dumb, Dumb – Firing a Teacher for Holding a Beer

by Darwin on February 12, 2011

Run! Horrible Teacher! AAAAAHHHHH!!!

This week’s weekly links is dedicated to the utter stupidity of a Georgia School District for firing a teacher that had a vacation picture of her holding a beer.  Seriously, she went to England, had a snapshot of her in a pub holding a beer and smiling and some conniving parent anonymously complained to the school seeking her termination.  Actually, she was forced to resign, but basically the same thing.   The details are: she had her Facebook page set to private, so only her friends could see her pictures (so someone in her network must have “leaked” the “offensive” photo), and they claim there was profane language on the page, but apparently, that was an ad served by Facebook with the word “bitch” in it.  The terror! I have a couple problems with this:

  • Primarily, this was utterly stupid and wrong.  Not only has she been wronged, but it will have impacted her students who lost their teacher without notice and it has drawn massive controversy and news coverage to their school.
  • She will get her job back after a costly court battle, likely with backpay and a settlement.  Who will pay for this?  The local taxpayers – so, the students.
  • This just makes no sense.  Shame, shame, shame for being hypocritical schmucks.  You tell me not a single school administrator has a facebook picture similar in nature?
  • Let’s consider this scenario: She goes to a restaurant and has a glass of wine. A parent snaps a picture of her and puts it online.  Should she be fired?

This is utter stupidity and will end up costing the district money in the end that could have gone toward education or lower taxes frankly.  Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

PC at it’s worst! The school didn’t want to offend anyone so they fired her. She did nothing illegal, immoral, and can assume nothing in her contract with the school stated she couldn’t be seen drinking. The school should of had the cojones to stand up for this teacher.

I wonder if it was a male or a female who fired her? I bet it was a female.

Wow, holding a beer *and* a glass of wine. Double bad teacher! If she had a third hand, she’d need another drink.

Don’t get me started. Our public schools really have lost their moral compass. They never seem to get it right, do they? They send kids home from school for wearing American flags too, and suspend them for bringing three-in-one camping utensils to school in their lunches.

All the best,

Based on the circumstances, it seems wrong to fire the teacher. This is another reason why we should be very careful what we put on social network sites. Private or not!

Seems like the totally wrong thing to do. I wonder if any f her student’s parents have ever had a drink? Maybe social services should be called in?

And I’d bet there are teachers out there in her district that aren’t as good as her who keep their job.

Yes, it’s just so wrong. I don’t know what possessed the school officials to make such a bad decision. Tsk.

I don’t care if it was a teacher legally drinking or a student illegally drinking (not on school grounds, during school hours) – Schools shouldn’t have as much power as people allow them to have.

It actually makes me happy that the school will get sued and probably lose. Maybe only then will people in that area fight back.

Wtf? I agree that this is retarded.

A teacher of my girlfriend’s used to show up to work drunk from time to time… now in that case action would be justified.

As far as Facebook goes, this is what I don’t like about it. Whether “private” or not, you have to expect that whatever goes on facebook or anything similar is not truly private. Still, she shouldn’t have had anything to fear from this.
